Independent Reading and our Classroom Libraries

‘The most important factor in the development of literacy is access to books.’

Independent reading enables
- opportunity to experience a range of texts
- opportunity to spend extended time on particular texts
Independent level means exactly that – the teacher is not there to teach strategies. That has already occurred, and now the students are putting them into practice. This means that the independent reading level should be about 97% accuracy.

Our aim is to make available quality literature.
- The purchase of books will reflect this
- We will provide quality in all our collections

An important part of our writing program is publishing. This material is an important component of our classroom libraries.

‘A classroom library invites students to browse, chat, make recommendations to each other, select, reject, and generally feel at home with literature. It also provides a crucial demonstration: supplying books for students to choose to read, creating a literary environment for them, are high priorities of their teacher and school.’
N.Atwell (In the Middle)

On the following link you will find recommendations reflect my reading. The list can be used for discussion, and we can continually add to it.
